Haitian Metal Art

Haitian Metal Art A few years ago I bought this wonderful Haitian metal art sculpture for my dining room. It is one of my favorite pieces of art. Besides the eye catching creative design, what makes this so interesting is that is carved by hand from a flattened recycled oil drum. Ever since then I have been on the lookout for other Haitian drum art.

Story Behind the Haitian Drum Art: Founded in 1990 by a multinational group of young entrepreneurs, Caribbean Craft, formerly known as Drexcoromotes creates employment in Haiti by training unskilled - but often highly gifted - craftspeople, and by assisting the independent artisans through the introduction of new designs and new market outlets. These pieces are all made by artisans in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti.

These beautiful, hand crafted wall art pieces are made in Haiti. Perfect for indoor or out!. Made with only his hammer, chisel, and imagination! All of the Haitian Metal Art can be used both indoors or out. The sculptures have a clear enamel coat when shipped to you~ To maintain this original look you will need to spray the sculpture with a clear enamel every year and a half~ We use our local hardware brand Ace Clear Enamel spray. When used outdoors weather will wear away the enamel coating over time~ Many people prefer the natural aging process which is a rust~ Or to maintain the original look give the sculpture a light spray front and back with the clear enamel~ These sculptures are made of a heavy gauge steel so will not rust away~ If your sculpture does rust or you have forgotten to spray it, do not worry, just lightly sand the rusted areas, then spray it with clear enamel front and back. Now you are good to go for another year!

Each unique fair trade metal sculpture is hand- cut from recycled 55- gallon steel drums. To begin the process, both ends of the drum are removed and placed inside of the remaining cylinder, along with scrap paper and dried banana or sugar cane leaves. Next, the contents are set ablaze to burn off any paint or residue and strengthen the metal. When cooled, the drums are sliced down the side and flattened, effectively creating a "steel canvas" of approximately 3' x 6', upon which the design is drawn. Using a hammer, chisel and various other primitive tools, the desired image is cut out and decorative patterns are pounded into the metal. Finally, a weather-proof finish coating is applied, making these fascinating pieces of folk art perfect for displaying indoors or out. Haitian metal sculptures all come with a clear, weather-proof coating but if exposed to the elements, they will begin to rust over time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if it's not the look you're going for, fear not. Just pick up a can of spray on enamel clear coat and go to it. Once a year will do it. Piece of cake! It's easy to hang your sculpture with just a few nails. Place the first nail within two design elements that are touching or notched. Then use a second and possibly a third nail, if the sculpture is large, to straighten and secure the piece against the wall. Just make sure that you don't place a nail in an eye or a mouth. A viewer's attention will go there quite naturally and therefore, directly to the nail. You don't want that!

This sculpture has been treated with a weather-proof coating. Over time, however, the coating will wear away and rusting will occur if exposed to the elements. Rust is not necessarily a bad thing. Some people crave a weathered look. Others prefer a glossy finish. If that is you, simply take five minutes once a year to apply a spray-on clear coat enamel. In the village of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, the air rings with the sound of metal banging against metal. Workshops line the streets of the village and outside each are stacks of discarded 55-gallon drums awaiting transformation. To begin the process, the tops of the barrels are removed and the open barrel is stuffed with straw and dried banana leaves and then set ablaze. This burns out the residue and old paint and strengthens the metal. After the barrels have cooled, they are slit down the side, pried open, pounded flat and sanded down, giving the artist a smooth flat surface, much like a painter's canvas. The artist chalks his design onto the metal and then, using a hammer and chisel, begins the work of cutting the sculpture and giving it form, detail and dimension. When he is satisfied with his results, he pounds his signature onto the sculpture and seals it with a protective, weather-proof finish. Hanging your metal art is easy, once you know how. Choose a place it within two design elements that are touching or notched toward the center of the piece and drive a nail into the wall at that point. Using a second and possibly a third nail, place those in other notched areas within the design to secure it firmly. Avoid placing nails in the eyes or mouth. A viewer's eye will go straight to those elements and a nail there will draw attention to itself. You don't want the nails to become part of the details - you want them to "disappear."

It's Cactus Metal Art Haiti To begin the process of metal art sculpture, the artist first visualizes his design, often taking inspiration from his culture and natural surroundings. Next, he chalks his vision for the piece onto a 55-gallon drum that has been cleaned and pounded flat. Then, using only a hammer and chisel, he performs the heavy work giving his piece form and dimension. The result is a unique folk art sculpture, perfect for home or garden use. This sculpture has been finished with a clear enamel coating, which will protect it from the elements. However, if it is displayed outdoors, we recommend applying a spray-on clear coat in order to maintain it's fresh-out-of the box look. Five minutes once a year is all it takes. Easy! A few nails and a hammer are all you'll need to hang your sculpture. Look for a place where the design is joined or notched and put the first nail there. Use a second and possibly a third nail, if the piece is large, in other joined or notched design elements within the sculpture to straighten and secure it to the wall. Make sure that you avoid placing a nail into an eye or mouth, as that will draw attention to the nail. You want the nails to "disappear" into the piece.

Following four generations of tradition, each piece of Haitian metal art is made entirely by hand with simple tools. Starting with a cast-off steel drum, the metal is cleaned, sanded, and pounded flat. From there, the artist chalks his design onto the metal and then begins the heavy, tedious work of cutting out the pattern with a hammer and chisel and giving the piece detail and dimension. Finally, he applies a clear-coat to the piece, which protects it and makes it perfectly suited for indoor or outdoor display.

The Tree of Life as a visual metaphor for relationships and the interconnectedness of all living things. One 19th century theorist described it poetically, writing, "As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds, and these, if vigorous branch out and overtop many a feebler branch, so by generation I believe it has been with the Great Tree of Life, which fills with its dead and broken branches the crust of the Earth and covers the surface with its ever-branching and beautiful ramifications."
