Haitian Metal Art

Haitian Metal Art A few years ago I bought this wonderful Haitian metal art sculpture for my dining room. It is one of my favorite pieces of art. Besides the eye catching creative design, what makes this so interesting is that is carved by hand from a flattened recycled oil drum. Ever since then I have been on the lookout for other Haitian drum art.

Story Behind the Haitian Drum Art: Founded in 1990 by a multinational group of young entrepreneurs, Caribbean Craft, formerly known as Drexcoromotes creates employment in Haiti by training unskilled - but often highly gifted - craftspeople, and by assisting the independent artisans through the introduction of new designs and new market outlets. These pieces are all made by artisans in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti.

Blessed Virgin Mary Mother Madonna, Haitian Metal Art, Recycled Oil Drum

Blessed Virgin Mary Mother Madonna, Haitian Metal Art, Recycled Oil Drum
$29.95

This Madonna was created by Gonzales Seig-Non. Seig-Non was born in March of 1988, the second of five children. He pursued his education in banking, but found his passion lay in metal sculpture. At the age of 23, he sees art as his path to the future. He says, "From the bottom of my heart, I wish for my designs to be seen and appreciated. It is for me a great honor and a joy to do this work."

Peaceful Children Peace Decor Sign Made in Haiti, Fair Trade, Recycled Metal, 13" X 13"

Peaceful Children Peace Decor Sign Made in Haiti, Fair Trade, Recycled Metal, 13" X 13"
$29.00

The Haitian method of creating sculptures originated over 6o years ago and has changed very little in that time. Outside each workshop are stacked 55 gallon drums, waiting to be prepared. Apprentice artists and laborers cut off the tops and bottoms of the drums, fill them with straw and dry banana leaves, and then light them to burn out residues and strengthen the metal. When cooled, the drums are slit down the sides, pried apart, pounded flat with mallets, and vigorously sanded. At this point the artist takes over, chalking his intended design onto the metal. Using a hammer and chisel and other simple tools, the artist undertakes the intricate work of cutting, beading and detailing each piece. When he is finally satisfied with the results, he pounds his signature onto the sculpture and seals it up with a protective finish. This recycled metal sculpture has a protective coating. If your piece is displayed outdoors, however, it will wear off over time. To keep this sculpture looking the same as the day you bought it, take five minutes once a year to apply a clear spray-on enamel coating. It's a snap. It's easy to hang your sculpture with just a few nails. Place the first nail within two design elements that are touching or notched. Then use a second and possibly a third nail, if the sculpture is large, to straighten and secure the piece against the wall. You want the nails to "disappear" into the sculpture - and they will. Like magic...

Metal Sun Yard Art - Handcrafted From Haiti, Recycled Oil Drums 10.5"x11"

Metal Sun Yard Art - Handcrafted From Haiti, Recycled Oil Drums 10.5"x11"
$24.95

Hanging your metal art is easy, once you know how. Choose a place it within two design elements that are touching or notched toward the center of the piece and drive a nail into the wall at that point. Using a second and possibly a third nail, place those in other notched areas within the design to secure it firmly. Avoid placing nails in the eyes or mouth. A viewer's eye will go straight to those elements and a nail there will draw attention to itself. You don't want the nails to become part of the details - you want them to "disappear." This sculpture has been finished with a clear enamel coating, which will protect it from the elements. However, if it is displayed outdoors, we recommend applying a spray-on clear coat in order to maintain it's fresh-out-of the box look. Five minutes once a year is all it takes. Easy!

The traditional Haitian method of creating metal sculptures from discarded oil drums has changed very little since the technique was first developed by Georges Liataud in the 1950's. To begin, the drums are burned out, cleaned up, sanded down and pounded flat. Next, the artist chalks his intended design onto the prepared metal and begins the heavy and tedious work of cutting and detailing, using only a hammer and chisel. Finally, the sculpture is sealed with a weather-proof finish, so that the sculpture may be displayed easily indoors or out.

Haitian Metal Art - Angel and Birds - 23" x 23"

Haitian Metal Art - Angel and Birds - 23" x 23"

Each unique fair trade metal sculpture is hand- cut from recycled 55- gallon steel drums. To begin the process, both ends of the drum are removed and placed inside of the remaining cylinder, along with scrap paper and dried banana or sugar cane leaves. Next, the contents are set ablaze to burn off any paint or residue and strengthen the metal. When cooled, the drums are sliced down the side and flattened, effectively creating a "steel canvas" of approximately 3' x 6', upon which the design is drawn. Using a hammer, chisel and various other primitive tools, the desired image is cut out and decorative patterns are pounded into the metal. Finally, a weather-proof finish coating is applied, making these fascinating pieces of folk art perfect for displaying indoors or out. Haitian metal sculptures all come with a clear, weather-proof coating but if exposed to the elements, they will begin to rust over time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if it's not the look you're going for, fear not. Just pick up a can of spray on enamel clear coat and go to it. Once a year will do it. Piece of cake! It's easy to hang your sculpture with just a few nails. Place the first nail within two design elements that are touching or notched. Then use a second and possibly a third nail, if the sculpture is large, to straighten and secure the piece against the wall. Just make sure that you don't place a nail in an eye or a mouth. A viewer's attention will go there quite naturally and therefore, directly to the nail. You don't want that!

Following four generations of tradition, each piece of Haitian metal art is made entirely by hand with simple tools. Starting with a cast-off steel drum, the metal is cleaned, sanded, and pounded flat. From there, the artist chalks his design onto the metal and then begins the heavy, tedious work of cutting out the pattern with a hammer and chisel and giving the piece detail and dimension. Finally, he applies a clear-coat to the piece, which protects it and makes it perfectly suited for indoor or outdoor display.
